A group of states governed by Democrats initiated legal action on Monday. The lawsuit contested the Trump administration's decision to reverse a policy implemented during the Biden administration. This policy aimed to limit the availability of devices that convert semiautomatic rifles into automatic weapons.
The lawsuit was filed in Federal District Court in Maryland by fifteen states and the District of Columbia. The action followed the Trump administration's withdrawal of legal efforts to restrict the distribution of these devices. Furthermore, the administration agreed to return thousands of the devices that had been previously seized by the government.
The legal challenge specifically targeted a device known as a "forced-reset trigger." The lawsuit asserted that these triggers are frequently used with assault rifles, enabling them to fire up to 900 rounds per minute without interruption.
During the Biden administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives classified these devices as machine guns under federal law. The Biden administration had previously filed lawsuits against manufacturers and sellers of these devices, and had seized over 12,000 of them from gun stores and private individuals.
