Japan Monitors Simultaneous Chinese Aircraft Carrier Operations in Pacific

Japan has confirmed the simultaneous operation of two Chinese aircraft carriers in the Pacific for the first time. This announcement reflects growing concerns in Tokyo regarding Beijing's military activities. The Japanese government reported spotting the Shandong near Okinotori Island, the nation's southernmost territory.

The Defense Ministry previously reported observing the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning near Minamitori Island, Japan's easternmost territory, for two days. This marked the first confirmed navigation by a Chinese carrier in those waters. The Shandong, accompanied by other vessels including a missile destroyer, was sailing southeast of Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture.

The Shandong, commissioned in 2019, conducted landing and takeoff drills involving fighter jets and helicopters north of Okinotori, within Japan's exclusive economic zone. Meanwhile, the Liaoning, along with other vessels, was observed southwest of Minamitori, also within Japan's EEZ. The Liaoning later conducted similar drills outside the EEZ.

A Japanese government official noted that the Liaoning was observed beyond the "second island chain," which China considers its defense line. Following these developments, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary stated that Japan would continue to closely monitor China's growing maritime activity and increase surveillance. He emphasized China's apparent intention to enhance its ability to conduct missions at sea and in the air further from its shores. Japan has communicated its position to China regarding the situation.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman defended the aircraft carriers' activities, stating they are consistent with international law and practices. He emphasized China's defensive national policy and expressed hope that Japan would view its activities objectively. The Liaoning, China's first aircraft carrier, was commissioned in 2012 and is a refurbished Soviet-made vessel.

There’s no justification for Japan's approach. This is just fuel for nationalism.
