Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya addressed Japanese citizens in Los Angeles on Tuesday, urging them to exercise caution due to ongoing protests in the city. These demonstrations are focused on President Donald Trump's immigration policies.
During a press conference, Iwaya stated that the Japanese government is closely monitoring the situation in Los Angeles with significant concern. He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of Japanese nationals residing in the area.
The Foreign Minister also noted that, to date, there have been no reports of injuries among the Japanese community. The Los Angeles area is home to the largest overseas Japanese population, with approximately 64,000 citizens residing there as of October 2024.
The protests, which began on Saturday, have escalated in response to raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. President Trump's decision to deploy approximately 300 National Guard troops on Sunday to quell the demonstrations further intensified the situation, despite the lack of a request from California Governor Gavin Newsom.
