Senator Cory Booker stated on Sunday that he would not accept campaign donations from Elon Musk. However, he encouraged the tech entrepreneur to actively participate in the Democrats' opposition to the GOP-backed spending bill. Booker emphasized the bill's potential negative impact on the long-term economy.
Booker welcomed Musk's involvement in pressuring members of Congress and senators to oppose the bill, rather than simply posting on social media. He clarified that while he wouldn't accept campaign funds from Musk, he would support anyone, including Musk, who helps inform Americans about the bill's implications.
Other Democrats, such as Representative Ro Khanna, have suggested welcoming Musk into the Democratic Party. This follows a public dispute between Musk and former President Donald Trump. The disagreement began after Musk criticized the budget bill, leading to a series of social media exchanges.
The conflict escalated with Trump accusing Musk of various offenses. Musk, in turn, accused Trump of ingratitude and made allegations about Trump's associations. Trump has expressed no interest in mending their relationship and warned of consequences if Musk were to support Democrats financially.
The "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," passed by House Republicans, has drawn criticism for its potential impact on the federal debt and deficit. The bill proposes extending tax cuts, increasing border security funding, and eliminating federal taxes on tips and overtime pay. Democrats have raised concerns about cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, as well as new work requirements for Medicaid recipients.
