China is applying its Yangtze finless porpoise conservation methods, using advanced monitoring and AI, to protect Irrawaddy dolphins in Cambodia's Mekong River. This subpopulation, with only about 89 remaining, faces habitat restrictions and is even more endangered than the Yangtze porpoises (1,249).
The dolphins and porpoises share traits, allowing for the adaptation of real-time acoustic monitoring. Scientists are using this technology to monitor the Mekong dolphins, with AI analyzing their sonar signals.
Recent findings include the discovery of 51 dolphins and 14 new individuals in a previously undocumented area. The dolphins hunt during the day, avoid boats, and migrate to deeper waters during the rainy season. Noise pollution and human activities disrupt their environment.
Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture supports conservation measures, but implementation faces challenges. A pilot program is planned, including no-fishing zones and guidelines for dolphin-watching.
The technology's success with the Yangtze porpoise, whose population increased due to a fishing ban, highlights its potential. The team is working to expand AI-driven conservation efforts globally, including creating a database and assisting other countries.
