According to Beijing Customs, the customs authorities at Beijing's two main airports reported that they processed departure tax refund requests totaling around 478 million yuan (approximately $66.52 million) during the first five months of this year. This figure represents a remarkable year-on-year increase of 91.61%, setting a record for this period in history.
Between January and May of 2025, the customs offices at Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport collectively managed a total of 12,180 tax refund applications from international visitors, which is an impressive rise of 147.01% from the previous year. Notably, the customs at Beijing Daxing International Airport alone processed refund applications amounting to over 72.37 million yuan, experiencing nearly a 200% increase year-on-year.
The implementation of the 240-hour visa-free transit policy has played a crucial role in boosting the number of foreign visitors to China, according to municipal customs officials. As the country continues to refine its tax refund policies for international tourists, there is a significant potential for increased spending in the tourism sector.
During the recent Dragon Boat Festival holiday, there was an astonishing 263.81% year-on-year increase in the number of tax refund applications processed at the two airports, along with a 130.59% growth in the total refund amount compared to the same period last year. To accommodate the rising influx of requests, Beijing Capital International Airport has established several tax refund counters within the departure areas, streamlining the processing for travelers. In addition, Beijing Customs is collaborating closely with tax authorities, tourism agencies, and Capital Airports Holdings Co Ltd to enhance the public awareness of refund procedures through various media channels, including airport displays and social media platforms.
