A spokesperson from the Chinese Ministry of National Defense expressed concerns on Thursday regarding the United States' proposed Golden Dome missile defense system. The spokesperson warned that this initiative significantly increases the likelihood of space becoming a war zone and could initiate a space arms race.
During a regular news conference, Zhang Xiaogang, the ministry's spokesman, voiced criticism of the US's plans to deploy space-based weaponry and broaden its military presence in space. He argued that these actions contradict fundamental principles outlined in the Outer Space Treaty.
Zhang further stated that these actions undermine global arms control efforts and escalate the risk of turning space into a battleground. He emphasized that the US has been the primary actor in the militarization of space, pushing it closer to becoming a theater of conflict.
China called upon the United States to cease its military expansion in space and take tangible actions to preserve global strategic stability. The Golden Dome missile defense system, announced by US President Donald Trump in May, is intended to protect the United States from various types of missiles.
