On Monday, an explosion took place near the U.S. military's Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. The incident resulted in minor injuries to four members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. These individuals were stationed at a depot when the event occurred.
Defense Ministry officials reported that the explosion happened while SDF personnel were preparing for bomb disposal operations. Those closest to the blast sustained injuries, including finger lacerations and potential hearing damage.
The explosion is believed to have originated at an SDF storage facility within the base's ammunition depot area. This facility is used to store unexploded bombs.
Local authorities have stated that there is no need for residents in the surrounding area to evacuate. They also confirmed that there is no current risk of additional explosions or fire.
Okinawa continues to host the majority of U.S. military facilities in Japan, even after the island's return to Japanese control in 1972. This occurred following Japan's defeat in World War II.
