On January 1, 2024, residents of Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture, Japan, were seen standing near large cracks in the pavement after evacuating to the streets. This followed a significant 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the Noto region of Ishikawa prefecture in the afternoon.
The Chinese Embassy in Japan issued a notice on Friday, urging Chinese citizens, particularly tourists, to be cautious due to the frequent occurrence of earthquakes in Japan. The notice highlighted recent seismic activity, including several earthquakes on the Pacific side of Hokkaido.
Japanese media reported that since late May, four earthquakes with a magnitude of 5 or greater have occurred in the region. These included a magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Kushiro, Hokkaido, and a magnitude 6.3 earthquake off the coast of Tokachi, Hokkaido. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of the potential for a large-scale earthquake around the Kuril Trench.
The embassy advised Chinese citizens to prioritize personal safety, learn earthquake self-rescue techniques, and prepare emergency supplies such as drinking water and food. They were also encouraged to register through the "China Consular Affairs" app.
Furthermore, the embassy recommended identifying nearby evacuation shelters in advance, as these locations are crucial for providing food, rest, communication, and assistance after a disaster. Staying informed through television, internet, and radio updates during emergencies was also emphasized.
