In a hard-fought match that extended past midnight in Rome, Italy, China's tennis player Zheng Qinwen was bested by the fourth-seeded Coco Gauff of the United States. The semifinal of the WTA Italian Open concluded with a score of 6-7, 6-4, and 6-7 on Friday.
Zheng's journey in the tournament had been impressive, including a quarterfinal victory where she defeated the top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus for the first time in her career. Despite this significant achievement, Zheng was unable to close out the match against Gauff.
The third set proved to be particularly challenging. Zheng had a promising lead at 5-3 but was unable to secure the win. The intense three-set battle spanned three hours and 32 minutes, ultimately resulting in a narrow defeat for Zheng. This loss prevented her from reaching her first WTA 1000 clay-court final.
