In response to inquiries regarding the US Army Pacific Commander's statements about developing agile units in anticipation of potential conflicts with China, Chinese Ministry of National Defense Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang emphasized that conflict and confrontation should not be the path chosen by either nation. He advocated for mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation as the appropriate framework for China and the US to engage with each other.
Zhang's remarks were also prompted by questions concerning the US Defense Secretary's assertions about building up the US military to address China's perceived "threat" and counter China in the Indo-Pacific region.
Zhang cautioned the US against creating a powerful enemy, whether intentionally or unintentionally. He characterized such actions as irrational and highly dangerous. He affirmed that the Chinese military would dedicate itself to enhancing combat readiness and steadfastly protecting national sovereignty, security, and developmental interests.
