On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed a recent report concerning the Diaoyu Islands and the surrounding waters. His remarks centered on clarifying China's position regarding the islands, which are also known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan. Lin asserted that the Diaoyu Dao and its affiliated islands constitute an integral part of China's inherent territory.
Lin's statement was a direct response to a report from Kyodo News. This report, referencing information from the Japan Coast Guard, claimed that a Chinese marine research vessel had been observed extending a pipe-like object into the sea. The incident reportedly occurred within what Japan considers its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), located near the Diaoyu Islands.
The spokesperson further clarified that any activities undertaken by Chinese marine science research vessels within the waters surrounding the Diaoyu Islands are entirely within the scope of China's sovereign rights. This stance underscores China's claim of sovereignty over the islands and its right to conduct research and other activities in the area. The Chinese government views these actions as legitimate exercises of its rights within its own territory.
