Runaway Kangaroo Disrupts Alabama Interstate, Causes Crashes

A kangaroo named Sheila caused a traffic disruption on an interstate in Alabama. The marsupial's unexpected appearance on the highway led to a temporary shutdown and even caused two vehicles to collide. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the incident.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported that the kangaroo was seen hopping along the side of Interstate 85 in Macon County. State troopers closed both directions of the interstate to ensure the safety of drivers. The animal's owner, along with the troopers, eventually managed to capture the kangaroo.

Macon County Sheriff Andre Brunson documented the capture in a live video on Facebook. The owner used a dart to tranquilize the animal. The video showed the sedated kangaroo being transported back to its home.

The kangaroo's owner, Patrick Starr, identified the animal as Sheila, who had escaped from her enclosure. Starr confirmed that Sheila was safely back home, had recovered from the sedation, and was eating and drinking without any injuries. The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine provided care for the kangaroo.

Sheila is a personal pet, though the family operates a pumpkin patch and petting zoo. Starr expressed relief that Sheila was back home and appreciated the temporary slowdown on the road.

Witness Austin Price described his surprise at seeing the kangaroo. He initially questioned his own eyes before confirming that it was indeed a kangaroo hopping down the interstate. This event is not entirely unique, as another kangaroo was captured in Colorado after escaping from its home.
