Relocation Considered Amidst Safety Concerns and Regeneration Plans

HMP Manchester, also known as Strangeways, a prison that has held some of Britain's most infamous criminals, may be relocated from its current city center location. The prison, designed by Alfred Waterhouse and opened in 1868, is situated near a major shopping center and the AO Arena complex. It has a long history, including housing both celebrities and notorious offenders.

The prison gained notoriety in 1990 following a lengthy riot, the longest in British penal history at the time. Notable inmates have included celebrities like David Dickinson and Ian Brown, as well as notorious figures such as Charles Bronson. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has expressed the desire to relocate the prison, citing its outdated location.

Discussions are underway between Manchester's political leaders and the Ministry of Justice regarding the potential closure of the Victorian-era jail. Local MP Lucy Powell supports the regeneration of the surrounding area, acknowledging the prison's presence as a barrier. The need for prison spaces is recognized, making the search for an alternative location crucial.

Despite a 2022 decision against relocation, a 2024 report highlighted safety concerns within the prison, including violence, a rat infestation, and drug use. A Prison Service spokesperson emphasized the importance of public protection and the prison's role in housing dangerous offenders.

The 1990 riot, triggered by poor conditions, resulted in significant damage and a 25-day protest. HMP Manchester has also housed various celebrities, including Ian Brown and Joey Barton. However, it has also held some of the most dangerous criminals, such as Ian Brady and Mark Bridger.

More resources should go into creating a safer and more effective penitentiary system. Relocation is a step toward that.

A new location might allow us to implement better programs for inmates, helping to reduce recidivism in the long term!

What about the jobs that will be lost if they close HMP Manchester? This will hurt the local economy.

It's about time! Strangeways is too outdated and does not reflect the needs of modern correctional facilities.

This isn’t just about moving a building; it’s about improving the lives of the people affected by crime and their victims.

Moving HMP Manchester is ignoring the realities of crime and punishment. It's a disservice to society!

The prison's location has always been problematic. I support the move for better public safety.
