During a heated exchange in Parliament, Ed Miliband was met with fierce criticism from one of his party's own members, Scottish MP Brian Leishman. Leishman condemned the recent closure of the Grangemouth oil refinery, which he deemed a “catastrophic” decision that left Scotland without any oil refineries. He expressed his dismay at the situation, branding the loss as “industrial vandalism,” and lamented the end of over a century of refining operations at this significant facility.
Leishman emphasized that Scotland had repeatedly fallen victim to such destructive industrial policies and demanded accountability from the government. He criticized both the Conservative Party and the SNP for failing to take preventative measures against the refinery's closure and challenged Miliband on the Labour leadership's previous promises during the General Election campaign to safeguard the refinery jobs. This prompted him to ask pointedly, “What has changed?” and “Why have we not done the sensible thing for Scotland’s energy security?”
In response, Miliband appeared somewhat taken aback by the intensity of Leishman's remarks but maintained that the Labour government had invested significantly to support the workers affected by the refinery's closure. He asserted that the government had committed £200 million to aid in building a future for Grangemouth and was dedicated to collaborating with various stakeholders to foster that development.
According to a memo from Petroineos, the operator of the refinery, the shutdown was officially communicated to the staff, leading to the beginning of redundancies. The memo indicated that as of that day, Grangemouth would no longer process crude oil, marking the end of an era that had seen the name Grangemouth tied to the refining industry for more than a hundred years. The Scottish National Party has since called for the nationalization of the refinery, a move that the UK government has turned down.

Shame on the politicians for letting this happen. They should be held accountable for their inaction.

This is how these things happen as a business needs to reduce money.

Another example of politicians failing Scotland. Where was the foresight to prevent this?

Nationalize the refinery! It's the only way to protect jobs and Scotland's future.

Miliband's response is weak. £200 million to cover up a catastrophe? Unacceptable!
