Vehicle Crash at Daycare Claims Lives of Four Young Girls

Authorities have confirmed the identities of four young girls who tragically lost their lives after a vehicle crashed into a school building. The incident occurred at the YNOT after-school daycare on Breckenridge Road in Chatham, Illinois, around 3:20 PM on Monday, April 28th. The vehicle struck several people before exiting the other side of the structure.

Six children were rushed to the hospital, with one in critical condition. The driver, identified as 44-year-old Marianne Akers, was not arrested but was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Police do not believe the crash was a deliberate attack. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

The Sangamon County coroner identified the victims as Kathryn Corley and Alma Buhnerkempe, both aged 7, Ainsley Johnson, 8, and Rylee Britton, 18. Billie Buhnerkempe, the mother of Alma, described her daughter as "sweet, outgoing, silly and funny." She also mentioned that Alma loved her family, friends, and playing sports.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, stating that his heart was heavy for the families and the unimaginable grief they are experiencing. The Illinois State Police issued a statement on Tuesday, April 29th, detailing the incident and confirming that the investigation is ongoing. The statement also mentioned that toxicology reports are pending for the driver.

The Illinois State Police, along with other local authorities, responded to the scene. The investigation is active, and no further information is available at this time. The Illinois State Police extended their condolences to the families, friends, and the Chatham community.

This tragic event follows another devastating incident in Vancouver, British Columbia, where a vehicle struck a crowd at a Filipino heritage celebration, resulting in eleven fatalities. In connection with the Canadian tragedy, Kai-Ji Adam Lo is facing charges. Officials have stated that terrorism was not a motive and that Lo had a history of mental health problems.

Four young lives… it’s heartbreaking. But I'm not sure I believe it wasn't deliberate, everything happening in the world makes one wonder.
