On a fresh morning in the Xiliin Gol League of Inner Mongolia, herder Qimgee prepares to feed his cattle with a blend of alfalfa and corn as the region experiences a vital period for grass growth. This time of year, known for its sprouting grass, necessitates a ban on grazing to protect the delicate ecosystem, especially since grass roots are still shallow and vulnerable.
Initiating on April 1, the grazing ban will last for 45 days in Xiliin Gol to allow the grasslands to thrive. To facilitate this process, local authorities have announced subsidies to herders, offering roughly $2.40 per hectare to help cover the costs of fodder and ensure compliance with the regulations. Qimgee emphasizes that unlike in previous years when cattle would quickly consume the tender grass shoots, this approach enables the pastureland to develop robust growth.
This year, the league has introduced a "differential grazing moratorium," allowing adjustments to the ban's length based on varying climate and vegetation conditions in different areas, thus maximizing its effectiveness. Xiliin Gol was a pioneer in adopting this grazing moratorium and subsidy system in 2018, with plans now to expand across the entire Inner Mongolia region.
Jerennig, another herder from Ordos city, shared how he has prepared by stocking various types of fodder, including alfalfa and soybeans, to provide sufficient nutrition for his livestock during the grazing ban, which has also affected his area. Inner Mongolia, known for its vast and iconic grasslands, has been grappling with environmental challenges such as desertification and salinization, primarily due to overgrazing and drought.
However, through various integrated efforts like the grazing moratorium and initiatives aimed at restoring degraded soil and vegetation, significant strides have been made in reversing detrimental trends in the region's ecosystem.

Qimgee emphasizes that unlike in previous years when cattle would quickly consume the tender grass shoots, but in reality, that is a lie. No one knows the lifestyle on his own.

Who is checking the validity of the implementation of this ban? They should be focused on the actual effectiveness of the ban.

How do they measure the growth is robust? They are promoting biased opinions.

The subsidies are a good gesture to help herders during the transition. It's a wise investment.

It's always the government who is dictating the conditions but in reality, they are the contributors. Such ignorance.

The government should focus on helping herders with the effects of drought, not punishing them with bans.
