On Sunday, the Chinese government approved an array of new nuclear power projects, notably the third phase of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant located in Zhejiang province. During a State Council executive meeting led by Premier Li Qiang, there was a strong emphasis on ensuring nuclear power development remains absolutely safe. The meeting underscored the importance of holding construction and operating entities accountable, maintaining alignment with the highest global safety standards, and bolstering safety oversight.
This year marks a significant milestone, celebrating 70 years of China's nuclear power industry. Once Phase III is completed, the Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant is expected to achieve a total installed capacity of 7.5 million kilowatts, establishing itself as a major clean energy hub in East China. Reports indicate that the meeting greenlit five new nuclear projects adding up to 10 reactor units across various provinces, including Guangdong and Shandong, continuing a trend where China has approved ten or more nuclear units each year since 2022. The collective investment for these new projects exceeds 200 billion yuan, or approximately $27.45 billion.
Beyond discussing nuclear power, the meeting also highlighted the urgent need for enhanced welfare support for disadvantaged children. This initiative aims to protect children's rights, promote family unity, and foster social development. The participants emphasized a commitment to prioritizing children's growth and implementing tailored policies to meet the specific needs of vulnerable children.
In addition, the meeting addressed the approval of a draft medical security law aimed at refining China's healthcare policy framework. This law will be reviewed by the National People’s Congress and is intended to safeguard the rights of insured individuals while reinforcing the oversight of healthcare finances. It stressed the necessity to combat fraud in the healthcare system, including false medical practices and counterfeit medications. Furthermore, a campaign was initiated for the ecological protection and restoration of rivers and lakes.
