Bird photographer Pei Yulin played a crucial role in preventing the destruction of a forest in Yuhu district, Xiangtan, Hunan province. The forest was threatened by logging plans initiated by farmers seeking to reclaim the land for agricultural purposes. Yulin's discovery of cattle egrets breeding within the area proved to be a turning point.
Upon realizing the impending threat, Pei immediately contacted environmental volunteers. These volunteers, in turn, reached out to local political advisor Hu Tao. Further investigation revealed that the forest, despite its origins as farmland, had evolved into a significant habitat for wildlife over several decades.
As a result of these efforts, the Xiangtan forestry bureau issued a directive on March 26th, urging a delay in the logging activities to safeguard the nesting birds. Witnessing the return of large flocks of egrets at dusk, Hu Tao championed the cause for permanent preservation. Ultimately, during Hunan's "Bird Loving Week" on April 7th, authorities made the decision to permanently protect the forest.
Pei Yulin expressed his relief at the outcome, emphasizing the extended period, over 70 days, required for the egrets to raise their young. Currently, volunteers are actively monitoring the area, working to maintain a harmonious coexistence between the local community and the avian inhabitants.

If the forest was farmland before, it should be returned to farming. Nature evolves, but so should human needs.
