The inaugural clinical use of the world's first integrated CT ring linear accelerator took place at Shanghai Renji Hospital on Saturday. This marked a significant advancement in China's research and practical application of sophisticated medical equipment, establishing a new standard in oncology radiation therapy.
The introduction of the uLinac HalosTx device highlights China's leading research and development capabilities in high-end medical technology on a global scale. This also signifies a major step forward in the country's pursuit of precise cancer treatment, according to Xia Qiang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Renji Hospital.
The collaborative effort between the hospital and Shanghai United Imaging Medical Technology Co Ltd successfully translated innovative technology into clinical solutions. This collaboration was focused on addressing critical clinical needs, ultimately improving public health.
Developed by United Imaging, the device overcomes the limitations of image-guided technology. It allows for real-time monitoring of tumor changes and radiation dosage throughout the entire treatment process, ensuring comprehensive patient safety.
The device's ring architecture and hardware innovations increase treatment efficiency by 50 percent compared to conventional models. Utilizing groundbreaking online adaptive radiotherapy technology powered by artificial intelligence, the entire process, from CT image guidance to personalized treatment planning, can be completed within 20 minutes.
According to Bai Yongrui, a doctor at the hospital's radiotherapy department, online adaptive radiotherapy technology is the future of precision radiotherapy. This technology helps to improve target coverage rates and minimize radiation exposure to healthy tissues. The device is designed to treat a wide variety of diseases throughout the body.
