A 15-year-old boy has admitted to the manslaughter of another student at a Sheffield school. The incident occurred at All Saints Catholic High School on Monday, February 3rd. The victim, 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose, died after being stabbed in the chest. The defendant, whose name is protected by law, also pleaded guilty to possessing a blade on school property.
The fatal stabbing occurred during the school's lunch break. A previous court hearing revealed the nature of the injuries Harvey sustained. The school had previously been placed on lockdown the week before the incident due to "threats of violence" between students. However, it was stated that the defendant and Harvey were not directly involved in that earlier lockdown situation.
Following their son's death, Harvey's parents have been actively campaigning against knife crime. They met with the Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, and have advocated for the installation of knife arches in secondary schools. These devices, similar to metal detectors, are intended to detect weapons and prevent further tragedies.
Harvey's parents, Caroline and Mark Willgoose, released a heartfelt statement expressing their grief. They described Harvey as a caring, loving, and funny young man, and stated that their lives were forever changed by his loss. The statement emphasized the profound impact of his death on his family and friends.
In memory of Harvey, hundreds of people participated in a march through the city. Floral tributes, football shirts, scarves, and messages were also left outside the Sheffield United stadium. The defendant has been remanded into secure local authority care and will face trial on June 30th.
