In Greater Manchester, members of the far-right British Movement gathered at the Duke of Edinburgh pub in Oldham on April 23 to commemorate Adolf Hitler's birthday. This gathering, which included Nazi flags and a cake adorned with a swastika, occurred without the knowledge of the pub's staff, who reported the event to the police the following day. The pub's operator, Craft Union Pubs, expressed its horror at the incident, asserting that they do not condone such behavior.
Images from the gathering, shared on the group's website, depicted individuals with pixelated faces holding a swastika flag and other Nazi symbols, while additional pictures illustrated them posing with a British Movement logo. CCTV footage from the pub revealed the individuals attempting to hide the flags after displaying them. In a statement posted online, the British Movement Northern Region described the event as a cheerful gathering amongst supporters to celebrate what they referred to as "Uncle A's" birthday.
In response to the incident, Greater Manchester Police emphasized its seriousness and initiated an investigation into whether the gathering violated public order laws. Local MP Jim McMahon condemned the celebration, labeling it a significant affront to the memory of those who fought against Nazism. He stressed the importance of recognizing and combating the ideologies associated with hatred and division within the community.
Craft Union Pubs clarified that the group had concealed their true intentions during their visit, leading to the oversight by staff. Once aware, the venue promptly notified the authorities, making clear their opposition to the gathering and their commitment to fostering unity within the community, rather than division. The operator reassured that the staff were understandably disturbed by the event, prioritizing their wellbeing as they navigate the aftermath.

The fact that they attempted to hide their flags shows they knew what they were doing was wrong.

It’s shocking to think that some still idolize someone like Hitler. How far have we regressed?

The authorities need to take a stronger stand against groups like this. Enough is enough!

Such gatherings should be immediately shut down! We cannot allow this ideology to spread!

It’s nauseating that they’re trying to minimize this as just a 'cheerful gathering.'
