Less than 48 hours after US President Donald Trump publicly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his manipulation in peace negotiations, Putin declared a three-day temporary ceasefire. This announcement, scheduled for May 8 to 10 coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day, has prompted immediate doubt about whether it is yet another strategic maneuver by Putin, who has a reputation for deceit.
While Ukraine has not yet officially commented on the ceasefire, skepticism is expected from its leadership. Previously, Ukraine had accepted Trump’s idea of a longer 30-day ceasefire, but Russian forces were accused of using the last temporary truce around Easter to advance their military operations, which included continued artillery fire and attacks on critical infrastructure, as outlined by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky reiterated concerns on social media, suggesting that Russia is attempting to mislead the international community. His chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, echoed these sentiments, claiming that Russian calls for peace with continued fighting are simply deception. On the ground in Ukraine, there is little reason for celebration, as the announcement of previous ceasefires has often been met with air raid alerts and ongoing military action.
In response to Putin's refusal to agree to an unconditional long-term ceasefire, experts believe that the Kremlin could be using the announcement to placate Trump while having no intention of actual compliance. The Trump administration is under increasing pressure, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declaring the upcoming week critical in deciding whether Washington will continue its involvement in this complex conflict or redirect its focus elsewhere.
Trump has questioned the sincerity of Putin's intentions, especially in light of recent missile strikes in Ukrainian civilian areas, suggesting that these acts indicate Putin is not genuinely interested in ending the war. For Ukrainians, any declaration from Russia that does not lead to a genuine long-term ceasefire is seen merely as rhetoric, devoid of meaningful intent.

It’s time to stop giving attention to Putin’s lies and focus on protecting Ukraine’s sovereignty.

A three-day ceasefire? It's a step, but we can’t hold our breath for any genuine change.

I hope the international community stands strong alongside Ukraine and holds Putin accountable.

Let’s not forget the civilians suffering; they need real peace, not a game from Putin.

Let’s hope this leads to real dialogue, though I’m not holding my breath given past experiences.

Zelensky and Ukraine deserve better than a temporary stunt from someone who loves war.

Important analysis! Trump’s criticism might just put some pressure on Putin for once.

Good to see Zelensky addressing the international community’s concerns regarding Putin’s intentions.

It’s naive to think Putin will ever honor a ceasefire – he’s proven time and again he’s a liar.
