HIROSHIMA (Kyodo) -- Bullet train services in western Japan were halted for about two hours Monday evening after railway workers noticed that a person had been hit by a running train, JR West said.
The Sanyo Shinkansen Line operations between Osaka and Fukuoka prefectures were suspended from around 5:50 p.m. after workers found a body part while inspecting tracks between Fukuyama and Shin-Onomichi stations in Hiroshima Prefecture.
There were some train cancellations and delays of up to two and a half hours.
The incident caused significant disruption to travelers. JR West, the operator of the line, confirmed the temporary cessation of services. The affected route is a crucial transportation artery, connecting major cities and facilitating the movement of numerous passengers daily. The investigation and subsequent recovery efforts led to the suspension.
The disruption specifically impacted the Sanyo Shinkansen Line. This line is a vital part of Japan's high-speed rail network, linking Osaka and Fukuoka prefectures. The suspension began at approximately 5:50 p.m. local time. The cause of the halt was the discovery of evidence suggesting a person had been struck by a train.
The discovery was made during a routine track inspection. The inspection was conducted between Fukuyama and Shin-Onomichi stations, both located within Hiroshima Prefecture. The inspection team found a body part, prompting an immediate halt to train operations in the affected area. This action was taken to ensure the safety of passengers and allow for a thorough investigation of the incident.
The suspension of services resulted in considerable inconvenience for passengers. Several train services were canceled, and numerous others experienced significant delays. Some delays extended up to two and a half hours, impacting travel plans and potentially causing missed connections. The railway operator worked to manage the situation and minimize the disruption to the best of its ability.
