A significant £1bn infrastructure initiative is currently underway, aimed at upgrading the A428 road, which connects two major cities—Milton Keynes and Cambridge. This undertaking by National Highways is intended to reduce traffic delays and congestion, particularly on the solitary stretch of single carriageway still in use between the M1 and the M11. With daily traffic levels at around 25,300 vehicles and projections suggesting an increase to 32,900 by 2040 due to local growth, improvements are essential for the smooth flow of transport in the area.
Recently, the project achieved a critical milestone with the opening of a new bridge that links the A428 to the B1040, which marks an important step in the development. The endeavour, which commenced in January 2024 and is set for completion by 2027, represents the largest road improvement on the strategic network in the UK. Skanska, the contractor managing the work, has received high praise from project leaders, who highlighted the remarkable achievement and collaborative efforts of the team involved.
Progress updates reflect the scale of the project, with project directors expressing pride in the advancements made during the first year of construction. They noted that the project's complexity necessitates dedication and expertise from all parties involved, reinforcing their commitment to meet deadlines and ensure that the new infrastructure will be ready for public use by spring 2027. Local communities and road users have been thanked for their patience and support throughout this transformative journey.
