On Thursday, April 24th, Workers’ Party (WP) chief Pritam Singh addressed the party's decision not to contest the Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC in the upcoming General Election. This decision followed expressions of surprise and disappointment from other opposition groups. The WP had previously contested the constituency in both the 2015 and 2020 elections and had maintained a presence in the area.
The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) was declared elected on Nomination Day after no other candidates submitted their papers for the constituency. When asked by CNA if the WP could have informed other opposition parties of their decision to potentially prevent the walkover, Mr. Singh responded by stating that the WP respects the agency of other parties, just as they make decisions in their own interest.
In response to criticism from People’s Power Party (PPP) secretary-general Goh Meng Seng, who called the WP's move "purely irresponsible," Mr. Singh suggested that Mr. Goh focus on the campaign in Tampines. The WP is contesting against the PPP, the National Solidarity Party, and the incumbent PAP team in Tampines, a rare four-cornered fight.
Mr. Singh made these comments after meeting residents at a hawker center in Sengkang GRC, accompanied by his party's candidates for the constituency.

They're challenging in Tampines, which is already a tough multi-cornered fight. Smart allocation.

Maybe they have their own strategic reasons for not contesting. They're managing their party effectively.

If the other opposition groups could have contested, they should have. WP doesn't have to babysit them.

Let's focus on the good work the WP is doing. This Marine Parade-Braddell Heights thing is a distraction.

WP has the right to decide where they allocate their resources. It's their call, end of story.

The media loves to stir up drama. WP made a decision based on their assessment, and that's ok.

Good on Pritam Singh for standing his ground. They don't owe anyone an explanation.

A wasted opportunity. Many voters in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights would have welcomed a real choice.
