Thompson's Stellar Saves Propel Capitals to Victory

Logan Thompson clarified that the impressive diving save he appeared to make against Jake Evans was not actually a save. He explained that the puck hit the post, and he almost knocked it into the net himself.

Despite the initial luck, Thompson's performance in the third period, marked by several outstanding saves, was crucial to the Washington Capitals' 2-0 lead over the Montreal Canadiens in their playoff series. His coach, Spencer Carbery, emphasized Thompson's impact, stating he "wins us that game in the third period." Thompson was subsequently named the first star of the game.

The Canadiens had numerous chances to tie the score, trailing 2-1 and putting pressure on Thompson. He thwarted a 2-on-0 rush, deflected a shot by Christian Dvorak, and denied Juraj Slafkovsky. The fans responded with a standing ovation and chants of "LT! LT!"

This performance was even more remarkable considering it was only Thompson's second game back after an injury sustained when a shot dislodged his mask earlier in the month. Thompson had been preparing in practice, ready to seize his opportunity when called upon. He emphasized the urgency of playoff hockey, stating he had to "hit it sprinting."

Thompson and Charlie Lindgren had shared starts earlier in the season, but Thompson solidified his position as Washington's primary goaltender, highlighted by a six-year contract extension. Lindgren had carried the team into the playoffs the previous year, but the coaching staff chose Thompson to start the series, recognizing his desire to play in these crucial moments.

Thompson made a key save early in the second period. He was at his best in the third, making 14 saves to prevent Montreal from tying the game. He acknowledged the Canadiens' expected intensity in the third period and how making those saves allowed him to stay focused and in the game.

Two periods of struggle, one good period. Still unconvincing.

Let's see how he handles a team with more than just two good players.

Coach's words sound like trying to overcompensate. Is this the best the Caps have?

Lindgren carried the team previously, but Thompson has been a great choice for this series.

The third period was a masterclass! He shut the door when the team needed him.
