On Thursday, April 24th, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported the detection of significant Chinese military activity near Taiwan. This included 19 People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, seven People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels, and two official ships. The activity was observed up until 6 am local time.
Of the 19 PLA aircraft, 14 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan's southwestern and eastern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). In response to this activity, Taiwan's armed forces deployed aircraft, naval ships, and coastal missile systems to monitor the situation. The MND confirmed these actions in a statement.
This incident is part of a pattern of increased military maneuvers by China around Taiwan. These actions have raised concerns about regional stability, as Beijing continues to assert its claims over the island. Taiwan has been independently governed since 1949, but China views it as part of its territory and insists on eventual reunification, even by force if necessary.
In response to growing concerns about Chinese espionage, Taiwan's ruling party recently implemented new measures. Members are now required to declare their plans before visiting China, particularly Hong Kong and Macau. This follows a history of mutual accusations of spying between China and Taiwan.
Taiwan's President and Chairman of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Lai Ching-te, announced these new requirements. He emphasized the importance of upholding the party's core values and the consequences for any betrayal. The measures include enhanced internal education for party members, the requirement to disclose visits to China, and tighter control over parliamentary and local council aides.
