In the wake of a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam that left at least 26 individuals dead, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has returned to New Delhi after abbreviating his official visit to the United States. He is scheduled to participate in a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting at approximately 10:30 AM on Thursday, as confirmed by Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh through a post on social media.
The attack, which targeted tourists in Pahalgam, has led the Indian government to consider convening an all-party meeting to discuss the national security situation. This meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is set to take place on the same day. The terror incident has not only called for national attention but has also resulted in high-profile figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman cutting short their foreign visits to address the situation.
In a strong diplomatic move, India has decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan and close the integrated checkpost at Attari in response to the attack. Furthermore, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri provided a detailed briefing following a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting, wherein the gruesome nature of the attack was condemned and condolences were extended to the victims' families.
As the investigation into the Pahalgam incident continues, the families of the victims are grieving and are calling for decisive action against the terrorists responsible for this heinous crime. Among the victims was Indian Navy Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, whose last rites were held in his hometown. The Pahalgam incident stands as one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in the region since the significant Pulwama attack in 2019, highlighting ongoing concerns about security in the region post the abrogation of Article 370.
