Sir Keir Starmer is reportedly on the brink of finalizing a significant deal with the European Union that would permit British arms companies to sell weapons worth billions to European nations. This agreement would allow UK firms to compete for contracts under the new €150 billion defence fund introduced by the EU, which aims to reduce reliance on American defence suppliers amidst escalating threats from Russia.
However, critics may perceive this arrangement as a betrayal of Brexit, as it involves the UK making substantial concessions on fishing rights in order to gain access to the defence fund. In recent discussions, the UK softened its stance, suggesting it would grant a multi-year fishing agreement that allows EU fishermen continued access to British waters while freezing quotas rather than further restricting them.
Confidence is reportedly building in Downing Street that a consensus can be reached before the upcoming UK-EU summit on May 19, with sources indicating that the atmosphere surrounding negotiations is positive. Alongside this, Starmer is also working to strengthen defence relationships with New Zealand, with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon visiting to discuss the extension of support for Ukraine and a new defence partnership between the two countries.
In addition to these ongoing negotiations, Starmer has been actively engaging on the international front, having recently spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store. A spokesperson for Downing Street confirmed the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for Russia to pursue a full ceasefire and to demonstrate a serious commitment to ending its conflict.

Fishing rights are important, but access to the EU defense fund is worth more. This deal will strengthen the UK’s position in Europe.

The EU is our neighbor. Cooperation on defense makes strategic sense, especially with the threat from Russia. Good move, Keir!

Good to see the UK cooperating with its allies. We need to be strong on defense, and this is a good step in that direction.

The UK should be focusing on UK interests, not funding EU defense. This is throwing good money after bad.

This is a sign of UK's willingness to build stronger cooperation in the face of ongoing global threats, which will result in economic and political mutual benefit.

This is a win-win. The UK gets access to the fund, and we can support Ukraine. This shows the UK taking a key role in leading the way for Ukraine.
