Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his willingness to engage in direct negotiations with Russia to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, he stipulated that such talks would only commence after a truce is established and hostilities cease between the two sides.
The Ukrainian leader acknowledged that reaching an agreement on all matters quickly would be challenging. He announced that a delegation from Kyiv would be sent to London with the mandate to discuss a full or partial ceasefire. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is prepared to negotiate in any format once a ceasefire is in place to avoid any deadlocks.
Simultaneously, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated his readiness for direct talks with Kyiv, stating that Moscow has always viewed peace initiatives favorably. He expressed hope that representatives of the Kyiv regime would share the same sentiment.
A summit in London is scheduled to include representatives from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Ukraine to explore diplomatic avenues for achieving peace in Ukraine. Despite Putin's public statements, fighting between the two sides continues.
On Tuesday, Russia launched a significant drone attack on Ukrainian targets, while a weapons depot near Moscow experienced an explosion, leading to a state of emergency. The cause of the explosion was not disclosed by Russian authorities. Ukraine's air force reported downing a portion of the drones, with others failing to reach their targets.
Zelenskyy's comments on peace come amidst a week of intense diplomatic activity. A Ukrainian delegation is expected to attend the London summit to discuss the prospects of a peace deal. The delegation will have the authority to discuss ceasefire options.
The summit will also involve European leaders who are expected to propose a "coalition of the willing" to ensure Ukraine's post-war sovereignty. The UK government recently announced additional military support for Ukraine, and the European Union is considering measures to restrict firms from entering new contracts for Russian fossil fuels.
During a press conference, Zelenskyy alleged that Chinese citizens were involved in drone production in Russia and suggested that Moscow may have acquired drone technology from China. He also accused China of supplying weapons and gunpowder to Russia, marking the first time he has made such an accusation. Furthermore, Ukrainian intelligence agencies believe that over 150 Chinese citizens are fighting for Russia on the front lines. These allegations against China have emerged at a critical time for Kyiv as it seeks to end the war.

Russia has never honored agreements in the past. Why should they start now?

A truce means giving Russia a break to launch their next attack. It's a dangerous game!

Negotiating under fire is just foolish; we need to strengthen our defenses first.

There's no room for negotiation with terrorists. Stand firm and keep fighting!

Zelenskyy is putting himself and Ukraine at risk by even suggesting negotiations with such a hostile regime.

A summit in London will only serve as a platform for propaganda, not peace.

Engaging with Putin will only drag Ukraine into more chaos. Stand strong and unite the West against them.

This is just another ploy from Moscow to stall and regroup. No negotiations!

Putin will take advantage of any ceasefire. History shows we're making a grave mistake here.

Zelenskyy’s comments sound like surrender. We cannot show weakness against such aggressors!
