The Aichi prefectural police have re-arrested Masaki Eguchi, aged 21, in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Waka Kato, whose remains were discovered in his house located in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture. Authorities suspect that Eguchi fatally stabbed Kato multiple times, leading to her death from significant blood loss resulting in hemorrhagic shock. The incident is believed to have occurred at some point between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on March 29, and Kato’s body was subsequently hidden in a closet on the second floor of Eguchi's residence.
Kato, who hailed from Katsushika Ward in Tokyo, had informed her family that she planned to visit a friend she met through online gaming, before leaving on March 28. After failing to communicate with her on the afternoon of March 29, her family reported her missing, prompting police to track her phone's location to Eguchi's home on March 31. Initially, Eguchi was arrested on charges of abandoning Kato's body, a crime to which he has confessed.
The two young individuals reportedly formed a friendship several years ago through the widely popular online video game "Fortnite." Gaming has seen a surge in popularity among youth, particularly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased accessibility of smartphones, with the gaming market’s estimated worth reaching approximately 1.26 trillion yen (about $8.9 billion) in 2023.
An office worker from western Japan recalls his experience of engaging with online gamers, in which he sought out others for cooperative play against monsters. He successfully connected with someone who shared a similar interest through social media and developed a close friendship over their gaming sessions, eventually meeting in person without any discomfort.
However, the negative aspects of online interactions have also come to light. The National Police Agency reported 98 instances of crimes involving minors due to gaming interactions over the past year. This figure has remained consistent, highlighting ongoing concerns. According to Kazuo Takeuchi, a professor specializing in children’s interactions with the internet, children are often attracted to powerful characters in games, which can lead to exploitation by adults looking to manipulate vulnerable youths. He emphasized the importance of educating children about the dangers of online relationships and promoting vigilance both at school and home.

It's crucial to focus on how we can prevent similar incidents in the future, not just on the tragedy.

Online gaming sounds fun until it leads to something like this. So sad.
