Following a police pursuit, authorities have charged three men in connection with the death of a woman on a golf course. The incident occurred at Aston Wood Golf Club in Lichfield.
The victim, 62-year-old Suzanne Cherry, was struck by a Nissan van on April 11th and later died in the hospital. John McDonald, 51, has been charged with manslaughter, assault by beating, and failing to stop a vehicle when directed by an officer.
Johnny McDonald, 22, and Brett Delaney, 34, have also been charged with manslaughter. Three other individuals who were arrested in connection with the investigation have been released on bail with conditions. The three charged men are scheduled for a plea hearing at Stafford Crown Court on May 23rd.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating the events leading up to the crash. West Midlands Police officers had been responding to reports of suspicious activity and began pursuing the grey Nissan van. The pursuit ended when the van left the road and entered the golf course, where it struck Ms. Cherry.
Specialist officers are providing support to Ms. Cherry's family. Her husband shared a heartfelt tribute, describing her as a "beautiful" and "unselfish" woman with an "amazing and infectious zest for life." He highlighted her supportive nature and the impact she had on those around her. Ms. Cherry leaves behind her mother, three adult children, two stepchildren, and a wide circle of friends and colleagues. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
