On April 22, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah traveled to Ramban district in Jammu and Kashmir to assess the impact of a recent landslide that caused significant damage. Accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner and senior officials from civil and police departments, he made his way to Marog, one of the areas hardest hit. Displaying a commitment to the affected communities, CM Abdullah trekked on foot through challenging terrain to reach Kela Morh, where a cloudburst had resulted in flash floods that left destruction in its wake.
During his visit, the Chief Minister engaged with local residents and received updates from district administration officials regarding the extent of the damage and the status of rescue and relief efforts. He expressed sincere condolences to families who lost loved ones, assuring them that the government is dedicated to supporting those affected by the disaster. Abdullah acknowledged the distressing scale of destruction, affirming, “Our administration is on the ground, working tirelessly to ensure the safety, relief, and rehabilitation of every affected family,” and vowed to do everything possible to assist residents during this trying period.
Furthermore, he directed relevant government departments to speed up the restoration of the national highway to allow vehicular movement to resume promptly. Reports from the district administration indicated that clearance efforts are actively underway, with teams from various agencies including the Public Works Department, Border Roads Organisation, disaster response units, police, and local volunteers working relentlessly to clear mudslides and restore normalcy in Ramban. The severe weather experienced in the early hours of Sunday triggered flash floods and landslides, leading to the tragic loss of at least three individuals, including two children, in Bagahana village due to collapsing homes. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remains closed for the second consecutive day as cleanup and restoration work continues amid ongoing adverse weather conditions.
