Authorities in Virginia are currently investigating a tragic incident in which approximately 500,000 bees were killed at Rock Hill Honey Bee Farms due to vandalism. Jerry Mattiaccio, the proprietor of the farm situated about 43 miles from Washington, D.C., discovered the aftermath of the crime on April 13, when he found the gates of his property secured with heavy steel chains and locks.
Upon inspecting the farm, he observed that the dead bees had their tongues protruding, an indication that they had been poisoned with pesticide, as reported by The Washington Post. As a result of this incident, Mattiaccio estimates that the loss of the 60 colonies amounts to around $20,000 in damages. The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted for further information regarding the case.
Mattiaccio expressed his belief that such acts could not happen by chance, declaring on Facebook that the vandalism was clearly deliberate and aimed at harming his business operations. In a message directed at the unknown perpetrator, he stated that their actions had ultimately failed, highlighting the support and decency of the local community in contrast to the destructive act.
To encourage assistance in finding the individual responsible, Mattiaccio, along with local businesses, is offering a $7,500 reward for any leads that could result in an arrest. It remains unclear who might have committed this crime or what their motivations were. In a bid for community support, Mattiaccio encouraged people to visit his farmers’ markets and purchase honey from him.
Having started with just one bee colony in 2010 and expanding to over 1,100 colonies before this incident, Mattiaccio affirmed his commitment to continue operating as a reliable farmer. He expressed gratitude to those who have offered their support during this challenging time and pledged to remain steadfast in his agricultural pursuits.

This vandalism stems from misguided rage at something, but it only damages innocent lives, both bees and farmers.

This act comes from a place of ignorance about farming and the crucial role bees play. It’s tragic and infuriating.
