Authorities have confirmed the deaths of a woman and a 12-year-old boy after their car was caught in floodwaters during the recent historic flooding in Oklahoma. The Moore Police Department responded to reports of individuals trapped in two vehicles on Saturday night. One of the vehicles had left the road and was swept under a bridge.
The Moore Police Department described the event as a historical weather occurrence that significantly impacted roadways, leading to numerous high-water incidents throughout the city. The department expressed gratitude to neighboring agencies for their assistance in rescue operations and extended condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
Reports indicate the victims' vehicle was carried into a creek and eventually lodged against a drainage pipe. The car contained three occupants; the third individual was transported to the hospital in serious condition. The woman and child were not found inside the vehicle but were located after an extensive search.
A father and son were in the second vehicle and managed to escape. Their car briefly rested on top of the car carrying the family of three. Moore, a city with a population of approximately 63,000, is situated about 10 miles from Oklahoma City.
The National Weather Service had issued flood and severe thunderstorm warnings across a large area, including parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, and southern Illinois. A storm system moving from the Southern Plains to the Upper Midwest was expected to bring more storms on Sunday. Police have cautioned about debris on roads as floodwaters recede. Meteorologists have also predicted heavy rainfall and potential tornadoes in Arkansas and Missouri. By Sunday morning, there were 16 reported tornadoes.
