the Russian president's actions that initiated the conflict.
The fundamental issue is the 2014 invasion of Ukraine, followed by the 2022 attempt at a full-scale annexation, and the subsequent atrocities, including mass murder and the deliberate targeting of civilians. This constitutes an international crime, leading to further crimes against humanity.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was quick to highlight the immediate disregard of the ceasefire by Putin. Reports indicated thousands of violations by the Russian army throughout the day. Russia, in turn, claimed numerous attacks by Ukraine, despite Kyiv's agreement to observe the ceasefire.
The true objective of Putin's actions is to shift the focus to the violations of the ceasefire, diverting attention from the underlying conflict. Ukraine had also agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire, which Russia had also agreed to but did not sign up for, seeking modifications.
Some have suggested extending the 30-hour ceasefire offered by Putin, in recognition of the earlier non-agreement to observe a 30-day US-brokered ceasefire. The hope is that a temporary cessation of hostilities could lead to a more lasting peace agreement.
However, Putin has amassed a significant military presence on Ukraine's northern border, potentially preparing for a renewed offensive to seize additional territory. This could include attempts to capture key cities.
Any ceasefire provides Russian forces with an opportunity to resupply and reposition. Furthermore, Putin may be attempting to manipulate the situation in America, where some officials have hinted at a potential withdrawal from peace efforts.
The performative frustrations of some regarding Russia's rejection of ceasefire terms can be used to create a narrative that Ukraine is also being uncooperative. This is part of a larger strategy.
The discussions are centered on how much of Ukraine Russia will acquire, and how much of Ukraine's resources America will extract. Ukraine wants future talks to focus on Russia's withdrawal from its territory. Europe's primary concerns are protecting Ukraine and building the military strength to deter Putin.

Zelensky is right to highlight Russia's violations. Peace can only come from honest dialogue.

The portrayal of Putin as a master manipulator is ridiculous. Let's focus on facts, not conspiracy.

This viewpoint discredits any legitimate security concerns that Russia may have had.
