A Race Against Time? Expert Forecasts and the Future of Artificial Intelligence

The pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a central goal in the current AI landscape. AGI is a hypothetical form of machine intelligence capable of solving human tasks using methods not limited by its initial training. The timeline for achieving AGI is a subject of debate among leading experts in the field.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, anticipates AGI within the next five to ten years. He envisions systems by 2030 that deeply understand the world and are integrated into everyday life. However, he acknowledges that current AI systems lack curiosity, imagination, and intuition, which are crucial for generating novel questions or hypotheses.

Other experts hold varying perspectives. The CEO of OpenAI expresses excitement about the imminent arrival of AGI in 2025. A former head of AGI readiness at OpenAI believes that the AI industry will develop systems capable of performing any task a person can do remotely on a computer within the next few years. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, predicts some form of AGI by 2026, describing it as "powerful AI" that surpasses human intelligence in multiple fields.

Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent AI researcher, suggests that AI surpassing human intelligence could occur within five to twenty years. Andrew Ng, another leading researcher, is more cautious, expressing uncertainty about the near-term arrival of AGI and advising skepticism towards companies claiming its imminence. Richard Socher, CEO of You.com, offers two definitions of AGI, with timelines ranging from three to five years for automating 80% of jobs to ten to two hundred years for achieving human-level learning and intelligence.

In contrast, Yann LeCun, Meta's chief AI scientist, believes that AGI is not imminent and will take years, if not decades, to develop. He emphasizes that AGI will not be a single event but rather a gradual process of progress.
