Zelensky Responds to Putin's Easter Truce Announcement with Skepticism

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reacted to Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a surprise Easter truce, emphasizing that there is a significant lack of trust regarding Moscow's statements. He pointed out that a proposal put forth by the United States for a comprehensive, unconditional 30-day ceasefire has not received a response from Russia for over a month, casting doubt on the sincerity of Russia's latest claims.

In his comments, Zelensky stated that if Russia genuinely intends to ensure a full and unconditional cessation of hostilities, Ukraine will reciprocate that commitment. He highlighted a principle of "silence for silence" and indicated that while Ukraine would mirror Russia’s actions, they would also maintain a defensive stance against any potential attacks. Zelensky further remarked that a brief ceasefire, lasting only 30 hours, is insufficient for building genuine confidence, and he proposed extending the truce if it proves to be genuinely respected, which he believes could help uncover Russia’s true intentions.

As the leader of a nation under invasion since February 2022, Zelensky asserted that the assaults from Russian forces continue in various regions of the frontlines, which supports his view of mistrust in Moscow's declarations. Putin had declared the truce during a televised meeting with military officials, citing humanitarian concerns, though he added that Russia would remain prepared to respond to any breaches. In a critical statement, Zelensky accused Putin of exploiting the situation, especially with air raid alerts sounding across Ukraine shortly before the truce was announced, further exemplifying the ongoing threats faced by the Ukrainian population.
