Supporters of current US Vice-President JD Vance are already speculating about his future, with some referring to him as "48," hinting at their belief that he will be the next president. However, according to expert Sarah Baxter, Vance faces a significant challenge if he hopes to follow in Donald Trump's footsteps.
The 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution, established in the early 1950s, limits a person to being elected president no more than twice. Despite this, Trump has expressed interest in serving a third term, stating he is "not joking" about his intentions. He has mentioned the existence of "methods" to achieve this, though he has not elaborated on them.
One potential strategy, suggested by Trump supporters, involves a perceived "loophole" in the amendment's wording. They propose that Trump could become the running mate of another candidate, such as Vance, and then assume the presidency if the elected president were to step down.
When asked about Vance succeeding him as the Republican Party's nominee in 2028, Trump acknowledged Vance's capabilities, but also noted that it was still early in the process. Baxter also points out that Vance has maintained a relatively low public profile, often undertaking international trips that Trump has avoided. Some of these trips have not been successful.
Vance's wife, Usha, has described her husband as an isolated figure, with her becoming his closest advisor. Trump's previous vice president, Mike Pence, declined to endorse Trump for president in 2024. Pence had been targeted by Trump supporters who refused to accept the 2020 election results and stormed the Capitol. An investigation into the January 6 riot revealed that Trump had expressed support for the idea of hanging Pence.

Vance's low profile is a concern. How can he lead if he’s avoiding public engagement?

Anyone thinking Trump can just sidestep the 22nd Amendment is delusional. Rules mean something!
