Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, has long been a favored destination for British tourists. In 2023, approximately 2.32 million British visitors flocked to the island, accounting for roughly 21% of all foreign tourist visits. However, this popularity has led to growing tensions between the local population and the influx of visitors.
These tensions have escalated to the point where some Majorcan residents are openly urging British tourists to avoid the island. Locals have expressed strong disapproval of the behavior of some tourists, citing issues such as noise, littering, and public intoxication. This sentiment is reflected in comments describing tourists as disruptive and unwelcome.
The underlying cause of this animosity is believed to be the negative consequences of overtourism. These include a rising cost of living for residents, strain on local infrastructure, and environmental damage. These issues have fueled protests and a sense of frustration among the local population, who feel that their cultural identity and quality of life are being threatened.
In response to recent policy announcements, including the introduction of a Sustainable Tourism Tax, several Majorcan campaign groups have voiced their concerns. This tax, also known as the Ecothis tax or Tourist Tax, imposes a charge on visitors, ranging from €2.50 to €6 per night during the high season. Despite the authorities' claims that the tax will promote sustainable tourism, locals have expressed dissatisfaction with the measures.
