Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a ceasefire in Ukraine for Easter, stating that this truce will be in effect from Sunday at 18:00 to Monday at midnight. During a meeting with Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Putin emphasized that this ceasefire is aimed at humanitarian considerations, although it is conditional upon Ukraine reciprocating the gesture.
The Russian government has expressed optimism that Ukraine will adhere to the truce as well, but also warned its troops to stay prepared for any violations or attacks that might occur during this period of supposed peace. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Putin's announcement, claiming that it trivializes human lives, especially in light of ongoing missile strikes in Ukraine from Russian forces.
Zelenskyy highlighted that alerts for airborne threats were active across Ukraine around the time of Putin's announcement, noting the continued presence of Iranian-made Shahed drones in the skies. He criticized Russia's military actions, stating they began Good Friday with strikes that caused harm to both civilians and infrastructure.
Moreover, recent tensions surrounding potential peace negotiations have been underscored by comments from former President Donald Trump, who hinted at withdrawing from talks if progress does not materialize. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the US would re-evaluate its engagement in the talks if there are no immediate signs of progress within days, stressing the urgency of the situation.
Historically, an Easter truce was attempted in 2022; however, it failed to come into effect as Russia sought to maintain pressure on Ukrainian forces. The idea of a truce has faced skepticism, with Russian officials labeling previous proposals from international bodies as disingenuous, arguing that they provide Ukrainian soldiers with opportunities to regroup and reinforce their military capabilities.

Zelenskyy is right to call this out. This entire 'ceasefire' thing is just a distraction.

Another false gesture. Zelenskyy is right, this is an insult to the lives lost. Russia doesn't care about Easter, only about gaining ground.

I'm skeptical. If they were truly committed to peace, they wouldn't be constantly bombing cities. Actions speak louder than words.

The sirens were going off during Putin's announcement! This is proof the attacks haven't stopped and the ceasefire is meaningless.

It's a courageous decision by Putin and, even under conditions, should be viewed as a sign of hope for the future.

This is a great opportunity to bring attention to talks. Hoping all sides agree!
