Nigel Farage has declared his intention to emulate Elon Musk's approach to government efficiency if his party achieves success in the upcoming local elections. He has criticized local councils for what he perceives as wasteful spending of taxpayer money on non-essential projects. Speaking during a campaign event, the Reform UK leader revealed findings from an audit of council spending, highlighting millions of pounds allocated to initiatives such as free driving lessons for asylum seekers, trips for civil servants, and ergonomic chairs. Farage has pledged to eliminate such expenditures in any council where his party gains control following the May 1 elections.
Inspired by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the United States, Farage emphasized the need for similar efficiency measures within British local government. He pointed out that councils manage substantial budgets, yet they often squander funds on diversity initiatives, climate change projects, and consultants, while also awarding contracts to companies that fail to deliver on basic services. He also criticized the high salaries of council officials, noting that many earn more than the Prime Minister and that absenteeism is prevalent. He advocates for a "British DOGE" to be implemented in every county and local authority.
The audit also revealed that, in addition to accumulating debt, local councils are struggling to fulfill fundamental responsibilities, such as repairing potholes. Despite rising council tax bills, some areas face tens of thousands of unfilled potholes. Reform UK utilized Freedom of Information Requests to investigate council spending practices. Farage cited examples of excessive spending, including significant daily costs for debt servicing and consultants, as well as substantial investments in electric vehicles and failed waste recycling plants.
Furthermore, councils have invested heavily in Net Zero schemes. Farage expressed shock at the audit's findings and stated that under Reform, council staff would face consequences. He attributed a decline in productivity to the Covid-19 pandemic. When asked about contact with Elon Musk, Farage acknowledged that there had been none, but pointed to Musk's accomplishments as an inspiration. Reform UK aims to secure at least 200 council seats and key regional mayoral positions in the upcoming elections.

More focus on Musk than local issues? Priorities are seriously misplaced!

He's likely to cut funding for essential services while rewarding his cronies. Don't fall for it!

He doesn't care about potholes; he just wants to bash diversity programs. Typical Farage.

He makes valid points about council salaries. Why are taxpayers funding bloated salaries?

Farage’s focus on practical spending reforms could turn around failing councils.

Farage’s plan sounds promising! We need to trim the fat and focus on essential services.
