The shipwreck "Panagiotis," resting on the white sands of a cove on Zakynthos, has become a symbol of the island. For 45 years, it has drawn thousands of tourists annually. However, the iconic wreck is now facing a serious threat. Scientists from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) have issued an urgent call for its preservation. They warn that severe weather could cause the ship to completely disappear into the sea.
The NTUA presented a detailed study on preserving the shipwreck and the surrounding beach to the authorities last summer. Despite this, bureaucratic delays have stalled rescue efforts, endangering the wreck. Professor Kaliambakos emphasized the urgency, stating that starting the project promptly is crucial to prevent irreversible damage. Significant portions of the "Panagiotis" vanished into the sea during severe weather in early 2023. The NTUA study, completed last June, highlighted the need for corrosion protection and structural stabilization of the ship's deteriorated parts.
The preservation project is estimated to cost around €7 million, but progress has been hampered by bureaucratic obstacles. Environmental assessments for both the ship and the beach are necessary before any work can begin. Professor Kaliambakos urged immediate action on the ship, followed by beach restoration. The project requests include anti-corrosion measures, an expanded protection zone, safe viewing areas, and a cave museum to display the ship's history. Tourists are currently prohibited from landing on the beach and can only view it from the water. Access from the rocky slope and the plateau above the beach is also restricted. The shipwreck is one of the most photographed in the world, though the circumstances of its grounding remain a subject of speculation. Rumors suggest the ship was involved in smuggling contraband when it ran aground during a storm.

It's already a natural part of the landscape. Disturbing it could ruin the beach!

Sound like too much red tape for a boat. Let it go!
