Upgraded Chinese Trainer Jet Enhances Pilot Training, Hints at Future Stealth Aircraft Technology

In the spring of 2025, a JL-9 trainer aircraft, part of a regiment associated with the Naval Aviation University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), was photographed after a combat exercise. The image was sourced from an official PLA media account.

An upgraded version of China's JL-9 naval trainer jet was recently highlighted in an official report. This version features newly added wingtip split rudders. According to a Chinese military affairs expert, this technology is designed to improve carrier pilot training.

The regiment organized pilots to participate in an aerial maneuvering exercise simulating combat scenarios. The exercise involved a red team and a blue team engaging in close-range combat training. This format was used to assess the pilots' combat capabilities in complex battlefield conditions. The video report showcased JL-9 trainer jets in action, with one deploying wingtip split rudders during landing.

Public information indicates that the wingtip split rudders are a new feature of an upgraded JL-9. The upgraded version, which had its first test flight in May 2020, has removed the drogue parachute installation and added the wingtip split rudders. The changes aim to enhance stability and low-speed performance.

The JL-9 trainer is used to train pilots for aircraft carrier-based fighter jets, which do not utilize drogue parachutes. The new split rudders function as air brakes, assisting pilots in practicing carrier landings more effectively. The use of split rudders can also reduce the aircraft's weight, thereby improving overall performance.

The appearance of the upgraded JL-9 in an official report suggests that the aircraft has reached technical maturity. The wingtip air brake and split rudder technologies could potentially be applied to future stealth aircraft. These aircraft may remove vertical wings to enhance stealth capabilities, necessitating alternative stabilizers like wingtip rudders for control.

This focus on military improvement will only lead to an increased arms race; it’s a dangerous game to play.

Simulating combat training is essentially preparing for war. Why can't we focus on solutions instead of militarization?

These exercises create a facade of strength but reveal an underlying insecurity. It’s not something to be proud of.

If they're so advanced, why do they need new trainers at all? Clearly, there's still a learning curve.
