On Tuesday, the Intermediate People's Court in Xinyu city, located in East China's Jiangxi Province, delivered its first-instance verdict regarding Mao Qi, the former Party chief of Wannian county in Shangrao. He was found guilty of engaging in bribery and has received a sentence of 10 years and six months in prison, along with a financial penalty of 1 million yuan, which is approximately $137,000. The court also ordered that all his illegal earnings be confiscated and handed over to the state treasury.
During the period from 2012 to 2024, Mao leveraged his various roles, including director of the talent work leading group of the Shangrao Municipal Committee, deputy secretary of the Wannian County Party Committee and county head, and secretary of the Wannian County Party Committee, to benefit others. His actions included securing project contracts, allocating funds, facilitating promotions, and arranging bank loans, all in exchange for bribes totaling over 11.5 million yuan, either taken directly or through intermediaries. Given the details surrounding Mao's offenses, the Intermediate People's Court in Xinyu city rendered its judgment in accordance with established legal procedures.

How can the public trust the judicial system when they’re so easy on corrupt officials? We need real justice!

This case should be a wake-up call, but instead, it's just proof that bribery pays off for some. No real deterrent here!

Confiscating a portion of his wealth is a joke. He shouldn’t retain a single yuan! Everything should be taken from him!

A fine and a short prison sentence do not address the damage caused by bribery to the community!
