The Northern Super League's focus shifts to BMO Field on Saturday, where AFC Toronto will face off against Montreal Roses FC. Toronto's sporting director, Billy Wilson, expressed excitement about the team's debut. He highlighted the extensive time invested in the project and the anticipation for the upcoming match.
Wilson, acknowledging the league's infancy, admitted limited knowledge of the opposing team. However, he outlined his expectations for his own squad. He emphasized a possession-based, entertaining style of play, aiming for both on-field and off-field success. The team aims to play with pace, focusing on quick passing and forward movement while prioritizing ball retention. Wilson recognizes the competitive nature of the Toronto sports market and the need to provide an engaging experience for fans.
The team anticipates a large crowd, with over 14,500 spectators expected, and the lower bowl already sold out. Wilson anticipates some nerves from the players, given the scale of the event. The club plans to host its remaining home games at the more intimate York Lions Stadium.
The Toronto roster showcases a blend of experienced players and young talent. Jade Kovacevic, the league's first announced signing, brings international experience from Italy and Hungary. The 31-year-old holds the all-time scoring record in League1 Ontario, with numerous Golden Boot and MVP awards.
Teenage forward Kaylee Hunter has impressed with her performance in the Canadian under-17 and under-20 teams. Wilson sees similarities between Hunter and Olivia Smith, a Canadian international. Coach Marko Milanovic believes Hunter has the potential to become a key player for the senior national team.
The team also includes South Korean international Hong Hye-ji, who adds experience to the defense. Aoi Kizaki from Japan, along with Canadian internationals Victoria Pickett and Emma Regan, will strengthen the midfield. Milanovic considers Regan a natural leader.
The Toronto attack features Kovacevic and Hunter, along with Mya Jones, on loan from the NWSL San Diego Wave, and experienced Nigerian international Esther Okoronkwo. Okoronkwo has played in France and Spain and represented Nigeria in the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Olympics.
The goalkeeping position is filled by Portuguese international Sierra Cota-Yarde, Finland’s Sofia Manner, and Canadian youth international Noelle Henning. Milanovic believes Henning has a promising future.
While there are some injury concerns, Milanovic, who favors a 3-4-3 formation, was not ready to share details. The team has been training together for ten weeks, though not all players have been available due to late arrivals or international windows.
Milanovic, who has a background in coaching, is praised by Wilson for his integrity and player development skills. Wilson believes Milanovic's attention to detail and ability to connect with people set him apart. He believes that the AFC's style of play will push the players to improve.

Excited to see the women's game grow! Toronto needs a team like this.

Possession-based play? Sounds boring if it doesn't translate to goals. Gotta score to win fans.

The coach sounds promising if he builds good relationships.

Good luck competing with the Leafs/Raptors in Toronto! That's a tough market.

Good for Toronto, hoping they can have a nice squad. The goal is too vague, and it could be anything.

A coach with a 'background in coaching'? Is that the only credential? Underwhelming.
