In a devastating maritime incident in Congo, officials report that the death toll from a boat fire and capsizing has climbed to 148, with over 100 people still missing. The tragedy occurred earlier this week when a wooden boat carrying approximately 500 passengers capsized after catching fire while on the Congo River in the northwestern part of the country.
According to Compétent Loyoko, the river commissioner, the blaze started due to cooking activities by a woman on board. The ensuing chaos saw many passengers, including women and children, leaping into the water in a frantic attempt to escape, resulting in tragic fatalities, particularly among those who could not swim.
Survivors of the incident were rescued, although many sustained severe burns during their escape. Efforts to locate the missing individuals are ongoing, with rescue teams, including those from the Red Cross and provincial authorities, actively participating in the search. The fire broke out near the town of Mbandaka, and the boat, named HB Kongolo, had set off from Matankumu headed towards Bolomba territory.
Senator Jean-Paul Boketsu Bofili from Equateur province expressed grave concerns about the high death toll and the plight of survivors, stating that over 150 of them are suffering from third-degree burns without any humanitarian aid. Boat accidents are frequent in the central African nation, attributed to factors such as overcrowding and late-night travel, and authorities struggle to enforce maritime safety regulations.
Congo’s extensive river systems serve as vital transport routes for its population of over 100 million, especially in areas lacking sufficient infrastructure. In recent years, hundreds have lost their lives in similar boat accidents as people increasingly rely on overcrowded wooden vessels to navigate the waterways, leaving the rivers and lakes as tragic sites of numerous deaths. Senator Bofili lamented the situation, describing Congo's waterways as becoming "huge cemeteries for the Congolese people," calling it utterly unacceptable.

Another crisis, another plea for help to receive donations. We are not able to solve this

More empty words from the Senate. They'll say they care but do nothing.

The boat was probably overloaded with illegal cargo too. They always are.

How are we supposed to believe these numbers? The reporting is always questionable.

This sounds like a PR stunt. The government will probably blame the victims.

Another day, another tragedy in Africa. When will they learn to be safe?

The Red Cross is 'actively participating'? That's all we get? How about real aid?

How can we help raise awareness and support initiatives working on improving Congolese conditions?
