Alberta's premier is scheduled to travel across the Pacific for a week of meetings in Japan and South Korea. The premier's office announced the trip, stating that the primary objective is to expand Alberta's markets in Asia, focusing on energy, agriculture, and other sectors.
During her time in Japan, the premier plans to engage with government officials, importers, and leaders within the energy and agricultural industries. The focus will be on positioning Alberta as a key partner in meeting Japan's increasing requirements for energy and food security.
Following her visit to Japan, the premier will travel to Gangwon State in South Korea, which shares a long-standing sister province relationship with Alberta. The announcement highlighted significant investments made by Korean companies in the province, including the establishment of Canadian headquarters in Calgary by several businesses.
In 2024, Japan was Alberta's third-largest export market, with exports to Japan reaching nearly $2.7 billion. Energy exports accounted for almost $1 billion of this total. Bilateral trade between Alberta and South Korea amounted to approximately $1.5 billion in 2024. Alberta's total exports to the region in 2024 were valued at $1.2 billion, primarily consisting of energy, nickel, meat, and wood pulp.

Why should we care about Japan and South Korea's energy needs when our own citizens are suffering?

I doubt this trip will result in anything more than a few photo ops and empty promises.

This trip seems like a waste of taxpayer money. We need solutions for Alberta, not more international engagements!

What about the cost of this trip? We should be investing that money back into Alberta!
