Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen held a meeting on Thursday in El Salvador with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported despite an immigration court order against his removal. Van Hollen shared a photo of their meeting on social media and reached out to Abrego Garcia’s wife to convey his support, but did not provide specifics about Garcia's current status, indicating that further details would be shared the next day.
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele also commented on the meeting, stating that Abrego Garcia, once confirmed to be in good health, remains in the custody of the El Salvadoran government. Just hours before meeting with Garcia, Van Hollen faced obstacles when he attempted to visit the high-security prison where Garcia is held; he was stopped by military personnel at a checkpoint and denied entry, despite other vehicles being permitted through.
The deportation of Abrego Garcia has become a significant point of contention in U.S. politics, with Democrats criticizing this action as a harsh outcome of Trump's immigration policies, while Republicans argue it fits within a broader campaign to combat crime. U.S. officials, including Trump and Bukele, have stated they see no justification for returning Garcia to the U.S., although his attorneys argue that no evidence has been presented connecting him to gang activity.
Van Hollen previously met with Salvadoran Vice President Félix Ulloa, who communicated that the current administration could not facilitate Garcia's return. The Senator emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Garcia's rights to due process are honored, expressing concern over Garcia's lack of communication with his family and attorneys. Van Hollen noted that international law supports detainees' rights to legal counsel.
The situation has also seen involvement from other lawmakers, with New Jersey Senator Cory Booker reportedly exploring a visit to El Salvador. In contrast, certain House Republicans have shown their support for the deportation by visiting the prison where Garcia is detained, reinforcing their stance on reducing crime as part of their immigration policy. The ongoing legal struggle surrounding Abrego Garcia continues to be marked by the administration's reluctance to clarify its plans for his potential repatriation, amidst a broader move by El Salvador to address gang-related crime through mass incarcerations.

Another example of Democrats trying to undermine efforts to combat crime. Sad!

Should have left Garcia in El Salvador. Too bad someone is playing the victim.

The lack of transparency fuels speculation. Van Hollen should be upfront about his goals.

Van Hollen grandstanding again. Using this for political points while ignoring the bigger picture of crime.
